What happened is that Java was getting uninstalled on XP computers.
Turns out that Windows Update was showing it as an uninstall. I deleted the package, created a new one from the MSI, and now there have been no problems.
I worked for months to get Java to deploy/update using the EXE - couldn't get it. Computers would detect that they needed it; they'd download it; but it wouldn't install.
