New Post: Install on Clients, but only update on Servers

Hi All,

after a lot of testing I figuerd out, that not the rules are the Problem, ist my way of revising the updates. Im still not sure what the best way ist, but when I changed an Update WSUS always told, that there is a newer one. To get rid of this, anytime I changed an update I declined and deleted it and imported it again. But it seems the Client still has this in mind and still wants to install it, even it has a new rule now.

The rules work now, I just do now for each Change create a new update.

Thats much more work - is there an easier way?

Salut,
Je sélectionne bien "remplace" dans la création de la mise à jour.
C'est totalement différent. Cette fonction signifie que seul la mise à jour remplacante sera proposé aux clients.
Par exemple, soit 2 mises à jour, Update A et Update B. Update B étant remplacante pour Update A. Si A et B sont approuvé pour installation dans un groupe. Les clients de ce groupe ne se verront proposer que la mise à jour B.

you can run a script customization while installing adobe flash player?

what I would have run these commands:

:: These lines delete the Adobe Acrobat Update Service
net stop AdobeARMservice
sc delete AdobeARMservice

:: These lines delete the Adobe Acrobat Update Service (older version)
net stop armsvc
sc delete armsvc

:: These lines delete the Adobe Flash Player Update Service
net stop AdobeFlashPlayerUpdateSvc
sc delete AdobeFlashPlayerUpdateSvc

:: This line deletes the scheduled task Adobe installs (against our wishes)
del /F /Q "%SystemDrive%\Windows\tasks\Adobe Flash Player Updater.job" 2>NUL

Hi Winfried,

thanks for this tool. One suggestion: It would be great to have the possibilty to add some more parameters to the install-string instead of using a MST (f.e. AUTO_UPDATE=0).

I have big problems with custom updates.

The update for Adobe Reader and Flash are executed properly. Custom updates not.

When I create a custom update the console and the windowsupdate.log report that there are no pending updates.


Any idea why? where am I doing wrong?

Hmm, this was never planned. ;) Never i am using this Commandline parameters for install, to configure autoupdate i am using ADM-Templates within Group Policys. One time configured, allways there.

on almost all clinet reports:

status = Not Installed
Approval = Install

on the other, these are much less, reports:
Status = Unknown
Aprroval = Install

So most of your clients see that they need this update, but didn't download it from your Wsus.
Can you look at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log to see if any error appears.

Try to launch manually detection, in command window, type : WuAuClt /DetectNow

I solved by restarting the service "Update Services" on the server.

How to add custom update a bat file?

In the options I only vbscript and powershell.

When I run the update with a bat file in the log file I get this error:

Running CustomUpdateEngine.ScriptElement
Running ScriptElement.
Running: C: \ Windows \ system32 \ Cscript.exe With arguments: "Java_8_40_Install.bat"
Exiting process with ExitCode = 1
End of ScriptElement.

actually the command cscript file.bat will never work.

I had to use the "Allow to execute a file" and not "Allow to execute a script"

Hello,

i've got a problem like above.

We use the same Hostname after re-installing a client. After re-install the client i can't reach the client via WPP.

On server commandline i can ping the client and get an answer as requested. When i send "detect now" or "report now" in WPP i got an "no ping" as result.

Under the tabs for "last contact" or "last report" i get actual Dates but in the tab "OnLine" the WPP shows me "no" (but the machine stands beside me and is online).

We are using Server2008R2 and for the clients Win7.
The Windows Firewall is deaktivated by GPO.
Under WSUS i found the client and the client gets actual updates from WSUS but no Updates from WPP.
We are using IPv4. IPv6 is deactivated on clients.
In WPP Tools->Settings->Misc is "Always use IPv4 only" marked.

I've tried "wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow" but it change nothing in WPP.

Sorry for two things: 1. my bad english (i am working on it to improve) 2. I am realy new on WSUS and WPP....

What IP does ping on server to the clients hostname return? Try flushing dns sache on Server.

Hello Norbert,

Ping hostname give the same IP as the entry in the field of the WPP (IP Adress). In WPP this field is orange highlighted. Flushing the DNS cache didn't chance the result. Restarting WPP and the WSUS Server didn't change the result.

The IP Adress is the same as the client has.

Update:
If i ping the hostname (ping ABC) i've got a result like "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx bytes time ttl". If i ping the FQDN (ping abc.blahblah.blah) i've got an error msg (ping can't find Host, try again).

Trying the same with a client wich is green highlighted in WPP (IP Adress), i get the normal result (IP BYTES TIME TTL).

So it has nothing to do with WPP. ;) Can you verify, that your Client has registered correctly within your dns Zone?
